Constructed in the vibrant era of 1927, this building has a storied history, hosting some of St. Louis' most celebrated dining establishments! Just a year after its grand unveiling, Gravois Road was paved, connecting the iconic Anheuser-Busch Brewery to the beloved Grant’s Farm. Excitement fills the air as this landmark continues to be a part of St. Louis’ rich culinary journey!

John Munzert
In 1933, John Munzert burst onto the scene with the grand opening of Munzert’s Restaurant and Inn, a vibrant celebration that emerged in the exhilarating wake of the end of Prohibition!
1937-1940
Banquet Room & Lounge
In 1937, Munzert’s Restaurant and Inn expanded with the dazzling addition of a banquet room, setting the stage for unforgettable gatherings! Just two years later, in 1939, a vibrant lounge was unveiled, offering patrons a stylish sanctuary to relax and enjoy. Then, in 1940, the excitement reached new heights with the introduction of a lively bandstand, where the air was filled with electrifying live music! Slay's Restaurant
In the 1960s, the beloved Munzert Restaurant and Inn transformed into the sensational Slay's Restaurant & Cocktail Lounge. Famous for its mouthwatering fried chicken. Owned and operated by the dynamic duo of Michael Slay and his brother Francis Slay. This iconic establishment dazzled diners for the next 18 years. Proceeding the death of Michael, Francis took over until the restaurant closed in the 1980's.
1980's
Grantwood Steak & Seafood
In 1985, The Pelican Restaurant and AJ's opened but didn't last long. Visionary investor Dick Piatchek stepped in, pouring passion and resources into a spectacular restoration and remodeling of the building.
By the mid-1980s, the transformation culminated in the debut of Grantwood Steak and Seafood, delighting patrons with its lavish offerings. Although this gem only sparkled for a few years, it paved the way for an even bolder venture. Fueled by ambition, Dick Piatchek sought out new investors to recruit the beloved Sam’s Steakhouse to this location.
